Quickly Shabu Shabu

237B Grand StNew York, NY 10002 (212) 431-0998Reservations recommended for large groups Shabu shabu / hot pot / Asian fondue … whatever you call it.  It’s not a complicated thing to offer; just have individual heating plates set into the tables, and put a pot of broth for each person… bring some veggies and meat, and there you go.  It’s not hard to offer, but it’s easy to mess up.  Quickly Shabu Shabu gets it just right (for a restaurant- I much prefer doing this at home, but hell, if you pay and go somewhere, no cleanup!).  Starting at $12.95 [...]

Pisketti and Meatballs

Yeah, I posted a similar recipe when I first opened the site, but since there were no pictures, there was a strong lack of interest. This is that recipe, modified slightly. Minced garlic Italian seasoning Tomato sauce Tomato paste Parmagiano-reggiano (you can use any type of Italian grated cheese you like) Ground beef Frozen meatballs (you can leave these out if you like- I use this big bag I got from BJ’s- Mama Lucia’s I think, and 1/2 oz. size- they’re okay- “they’ll do in a pinch” since my homemade meatballs and sauce take 3-4 hours from start to finish) [...]

China Grill

60 West 53rd StreetManhattan, NY 10019(212) 333-7788website (point of semi-interest: if you look in the picture, directly to the left of that hostess-stand looking thing is where we sat) I’ll admit that I was extremely skeptical when my b. told me he’d gone to this place and enjoyed it a lot.  I’m pretty snobby when it comes to Chinese food.  Ok, I’m a lot snobby; I’ve been to the best places in New York (and I think any Asian person would agree, all the best places aren’t owned by or operated by non-Asians) and I know what I like, and I [...]

Ben’s Deli

Ben’s Deli

209 W. 38th Streetb/w 7th and 8th Avenue (close to 7th Ave.)(212) 398-2367website Ben’s Deli and I have had a rough relationship.  The first time my sister and her now-husband took me to the location in Carle Place, I had no idea what kosher meant (I was 19).  The menu is fairly extensive; we were hungry and pressed for time.  I blurted out my order, “Can I have a ham and cheese sandwich?” or perhaps the slightly less offensive “How come there’s no cheese on the menu?”  The waitress just looked at me and said she’d come back, at which [...]

Beef Ho Fun, Yvonne-Style

Beef Ho Fun, Yvonne-Style

Ho Yau (Lee Kum Kee Panda Oyster Sauce) Sesame Oil Broccoli Ho Fun Noodles Beef Soy Sauce Sugar Garlic Powder Cornstarch Slurry I thinly sliced the beef by freezing it a little first then using my giant meat cleaver (for some reason, my boyfriend and his father find it hysterical that I use this cleaver to chop/cut lots of things, from meat to some veggies- I think it’s because they’re not Asian, since my mom and plenty of Asian cooks I know use this regularly for chopping) to make nice, even cuts. I then marinated the beef in a mixture [...]
